Tag Questions
‘Tag’ কথাটির অর্থ লেজুড় বা ফিতা। মূল বাক্যের শেষে শব্দ বা শব্দগুচ্ছ জুড়ে দিয়ে Interrogative sentence তৈরী করা হয় বলে একে Tag question বলা হয়। সাধারণত Tag question-এ শব্দগুচ্ছ জুড়ে দিয়ে Subject-এর কাজ বা অবস্থা সম্পর্কে Negative (Not) বা Positive (Yes) উত্তর প্রত্যাশা করা হয়। অর্থাৎ, Assertive-এর affirmative sentence-কে Tag question করলে Negative (Not) এবং Negative Sentence-কে Tag question করলে তা Positive form ধারণ করে। যেমন—
You are sick, aren’t you?
He is coming, isn’t he?

Tag Question গঠনের নিয়মালি:
(i) কোনো Negative Sentence-এর সঙ্গে Question যুক্ত হলে ওই Sentence-এর Tense ও Subject-এর Number অনুযায়ী একটি Auxiliary verb বসিয়ে Subject-টির Pronoun বসাতে হবে। যেমন—
You did not go there, did you?
Structure (গঠন): Negative Sentence + Auxiliary verb + Pronoun+?
You haven’t finished the work, have you?
নিচে Tense ও Number অনুযায়ী Auxiliary verb-এর সঙ্গে Pronoun বসিয়ে Tag question গঠন করা হলো।
Present Indefinite tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে:
do I? do we? è are you? are you? è is he/she? are they? è do you? do you?
(i) কোনো Negative Sentence-এর সঙ্গে Question যুক্ত হলে ওই Sentence-এর Tense ও Subject-এর Number অনুযায়ী একটি Auxiliary verb বসিয়ে Subject-টির Pronoun বসাতে হবে। যেমন—
You did not go there, did you?

নিচে Tense ও Number অনুযায়ী Auxiliary verb-এর সঙ্গে Pronoun বসিয়ে Tag question গঠন করা হলো।
Present Indefinite tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে:
do I? do we? è are you? are you? è is he/she? are they? è do you? do you?
è does he/she? do they? è am I? are we?
Present continuous tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে Negative sentence-এর সঙ্গে যে Auxiliary-টি ব্যবহূত হয়, সেটিই Tag question-এ ব্যবহূত হবে—
am I? are we? è are you? are you? è is he/she? are they?
Past indefinite tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে:
did I? did we? è did you? did you? è did he/she? did they? è was I? were we?
Present continuous tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে Negative sentence-এর সঙ্গে যে Auxiliary-টি ব্যবহূত হয়, সেটিই Tag question-এ ব্যবহূত হবে—
am I? are we? è are you? are you? è is he/she? are they?
Past indefinite tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে:

Future indefinite tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে বাক্যে যে Auxiliary verb-টি ব্যবহূত হয়, সেটিই Tag question-এ ব্যবহূত হবে—
shall I? shall we? è will I? will you? è will he/she? will they?
Present perfect tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে বাক্যে যে Auxiliary verb-টি ব্যবহূত হয়, সেটিই Tag question-এ ব্যবহূত হবে—
have I? have we? è have you? have you? è has he/she? have they?
(ii) Affirmative sentence-এর সঙ্গে Tag question যুক্ত হলে ওই Sentence-এর tense এবং subject-এর Number অনুযায়ী Auxiliary verb + not-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ বসিয়ে Subject-টির Pronoun বসাতে হবে। যেমন: You went there, didn’t you?
Auxiliary verb + not-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ:
am + not => aren’t , are + not => aren’t, do + not => don’t , was + not => wasn’t, is + not => isn’t, were + not => weren’t, has + not => hasn’t, does + not => doesn’t , have + not => haven’t,
Future indefinite tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে বাক্যে যে Auxiliary verb-টি ব্যবহূত হয়, সেটিই Tag question-এ ব্যবহূত হবে—
shall I? shall we? è will I? will you? è will he/she? will they?
Present perfect tense-এর ক্ষেত্রে বাক্যে যে Auxiliary verb-টি ব্যবহূত হয়, সেটিই Tag question-এ ব্যবহূত হবে—
have I? have we? è have you? have you? è has he/she? have they?
(ii) Affirmative sentence-এর সঙ্গে Tag question যুক্ত হলে ওই Sentence-এর tense এবং subject-এর Number অনুযায়ী Auxiliary verb + not-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ বসিয়ে Subject-টির Pronoun বসাতে হবে। যেমন: You went there, didn’t you?
Auxiliary verb + not-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ:
am + not => aren’t , are + not => aren’t, do + not => don’t , was + not => wasn’t, is + not => isn’t, were + not => weren’t, has + not => hasn’t, does + not => doesn’t , have + not => haven’t,
will + not => won’t, shall + not => shan’t, can + not => can’t, could + not => couldn’t, must + not => mustn’t
(iii) Sentence-টিতে যদি Modal auxiliary Can, Could, Must, Would ইত্যাদি থাকে, তাহলে Tag question-এ এগুলোই ব্যবহূত হবে। যেমন—
You can drive a car, can’t you?
(iv) Let us (let’s) দিয়ে Sentence গঠিত হলে Tag question করার সময় Shall we ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন—
Let’s go for a walk, shall we?
Let’s have a meal, shall we?
(v) Introductory It বা There দিয়ে Sentence শুরু হলে Tag question করার সময় Auxiliary verb-এর পর It বা There বসে। যেমন—
There is no pond in this village, is there?
It is not bad at all, is it?
There are many boys in the field, aren’t there?
It is a nice doll, isn’t it?
(vi) Sentence-টিতে যদি Neither, No (adjective হিসেবে), None, No one, Nobody, Nothing, Scarcely, Barely, Hardly ever, Seldom,ইত্যাদি যেকোনোএকটি Word থাকে, তাহলে এটিকে Negative sentence হিসেবে ধরতে হবে। এসব Sentence-এর সঙ্গে Tag question গঠনের সময় Negative sentence-এর Tag গঠনের নিয়ম অনুসরণ করতে হয়। যেমন—
Neither of them went, did they?
She hardly ever goes there, does she?
(vii) যদি কোনো Sentence-এর Subject হিসেবে Anybody, Anyone, No one, Nobody, None, Neither ইত্যাদি ব্যবহূত হয়, তাহলে Tag question গঠনের সময় Auxiliary verb-এর সঙ্গে pronoun ‘they’ ব্যবহূত হবে। যেমন—
Nobody is allowed, are they?
Neither of them has passed, have they?
বি.দ্র. ওপরের Sentence-গুলোতে Auxiliary verb-টি singular থাকলেও Tag question-এ They ব্যবহূত হওয়ার কারণে তা পরিবর্তিত হয়ে plural হয়ে যাবে।
(viii) Affirmative sentence-এর Subject Everyone, Everybody, Somebody, Someone ইত্যাদির যেকোনো একটি ব্যবহূত হলে Tag question গঠনের সময় Auxiliary verb + not-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপের সঙ্গে ‘they’ Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহূত হবে। যেমন—
Everybody saw you, didn’t they?
Somebody will say so, won’t they?
(ix) Imperative (আদেশ, উপদেশ বা অনুরোধমূলক) sentence-এর Tag question সাধারণত will দিয়ে শুরু হয়। এ ক্ষেত্রে হ্যাঁ-বোধক Imperative sentence-এর Tag হ্যাঁ-বোধক কিংবা না-বোধক উভয়ই হতে পারে। যেমন—
Please give me some water, will you?
Or, Please give me some water, won’t you?
Come here, will you?
Or, Come here, won’t you?
(x) Imperative sentence-টি যদি Negative (না-বোধক) হয়, তাহলে সেটার Tag question কেবল হ্যাঁ-বোধক হবে। যেমন—
Don’t play in the sun, will you?
Don’t laugh at the poor, will you?
(iii) Sentence-টিতে যদি Modal auxiliary Can, Could, Must, Would ইত্যাদি থাকে, তাহলে Tag question-এ এগুলোই ব্যবহূত হবে। যেমন—
You can drive a car, can’t you?
(iv) Let us (let’s) দিয়ে Sentence গঠিত হলে Tag question করার সময় Shall we ব্যবহূত হয়। যেমন—
Let’s go for a walk, shall we?
Let’s have a meal, shall we?
