Borlaug Higher Education Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program team visited Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) on November 5, 2012.
Honoring the legacy of Nobel peace prize laureate Noman Borlaug, this is a major new effort to increase the number of agricultural scientists and strengthen scientific institutions in the developing countries.
The program will link support long-term training of agricultural researchers at the master's and doctoral levels and will link scientific and higher education, communities in feed the future countries and the United States.
The team sat on a meeting with SAU authority in the conference room of SAU. They asked about the university overall situation ie academic, research, finance, current project etc.
Professor M Zahidul Haque, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture presented the overall status of the university while Professor Dr. Mohammad Ali , Dean, Post Graduate Studies, Professor Md. Anwarul Haque Beg, dean, faculty of Animal Science & Veterinary Medicine, Professpr Zulfikar Ahamed Reza, dean, faculty of Agribusiness Management, Professor Dr. Md Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Director, Planning and Works were also present. The team pleased about the university status and offered thanks all & Professor M Zahidul Haque, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture for his wonderful presentation.
Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan was presided over the meeting. The BHEARD program will be implemented by Michigan State University (MSU) in close partnership with United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/BFS, USAID missions, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT).
The programme will launch in Ghana, Uganda, Mali, Mozambique and Bangladesh with Potential to expend to other Feed the Future countries. The design of training programs will be grounded in a strategic planning process facilitated each institution. The BHEARD program will focus on training a cadre of BHEARD fellows at the MS and PhD levels which is indispensible for creating scientific capacity.
